What Local Contractors Handle

Every job below is done by the independent contractor you're connected with, never by this site. Each page explains the work, typical costs with sources and what to ask.

  • Full waterproofing systems. An interior drain feeding a sump, or a membrane on the outside of the wall. See basement waterproofing.
  • Leak repair. Finding the exact spot water enters and closing it off. See basement leak repair.
  • Crack repair. Injection for poured concrete, repointing for stone and brick. See foundation crack repair.
  • Sump pumps. A pit, pump, check valve and a discharge line pointed away from the house. See sump pump installation.
  • Drainage. Drain tile, gutters, downspout extensions and grading on small lots. See basement drainage.

Picking the Right Service

You don't have to choose before anyone visits. Still, a few patterns help. Water that appears along the bottom of the wall after rain often leads to a drain and sump conversation. A single wet crack may need only crack repair. Puddles near one corner sometimes start with a clogged gutter or a downspout dumping water against the foundation, which is the cheapest place to begin.

Older fieldstone and brick walls, common in many Boston homes, can let water through in several places at once, so a contractor may suggest more than one kind of work. Ask why each item is on the estimate.

One problem isn't on this list: water or sewage coming up a floor drain. That's usually a sewer backup, and in Boston the fix is a backwater valve the owner keeps up, so call the Boston Water and Sewer Commission at 617-989-7800 first.
